Typhoon Committee Secretariat Holds Inauguration Ceremony for New Office
The inauguration ceremony for the new office of the Typhoon Committee Secretariat – established jointly by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) – was held on the afternoon of 2 December. The ceremony was co-officiated by representatives from the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry ofForeign Affairs of China in the Macao Special Administrative Region, the Typhoon Committee, the Typhoon Committee Secretariat, ESCAP, and WMO.

In his address at the inauguration
ceremony, Typhoon Committee Chairperson Nathaniel Servando stated that the
unwavering support of the Macao SAR Government for the Typhoon Committee in
institutional capacity building, staff development, and infrastructure has been
the cornerstone of the Secretariat’s continued effective operation. He noted
that the new office will better support members in responding to meteorological
and hydrological disasters, delivering tangible results for the public in
disaster risk governance.

In his remarks at the ceremony, Dr. Leong Weng Kun, the Director of Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau said that since the Typhoon Committee Secretariat was established in Macao in 2007, the Macao SAR Government has been committed to strengthening regional cooperation in typhoon disaster prevention and mitigation. The Typhoon Committee Secretariat has played a key role in connecting its members, sharing knowledge, and facilitating joint efforts to reduce the impact of tropical cyclones. The inauguration of the new office demonstrates the commitment of all parties to enhancing regional resilience to disasters and highlights the strong partnership between Macao and the Typhoon Committee.
