2025-04-24

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), under the leadership of Director-General Dr Sugunyanee Yavinchan, recently welcomed Dr Duan Yihong from the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee Secretariat for a high-level meeting focused on strengthening regional collaboration in tropical cyclone forecasting, early warning systems, and disaster risk reduction.

The meeting highlighted the deep and lasting partnership between Thailand and the Typhoon Committee, which has grown steadily since Thailand joined as a founding member in 1968. At the heart of the discussions was a shared determination to enhance cooperation among member countries to meet the growing challenges posed by extreme weather and climate change across the Asia-Pacific.

Dr Sugunyanee reflected on the progress made over more than 50 years of working together, noting how the collaboration has played a vital role in advancing Thailand’s meteorological capabilities. She emphasised TMD’s ongoing commitment to regional efforts, especially in areas such as knowledge exchange, training, and the use of innovative technologies to improve early warning systems.

Dr Duan expressed his appreciation for Thailand’s continued involvement and acknowledged TMD’s leadership in promoting regional coordination. He encouraged Thailand’s further participation in upcoming Committee activities and extended an invitation to consider hosting a future session of the Typhoon Committee.

The visit was a strong reminder of the value of long-standing partnerships in tackling shared challenges. Both sides agreed that deeper cooperation—through joint research, technical exchange, and coordinated policy development—will be key to building a safer, more resilient future for communities across the region.
