The Typhoon Committee has been holding one session annually since 1968 as specified in its Rules of Procedure. The convenor or the annual session is the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) and is organized in cooperation with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Representatives of non-member countries and international organizations (ICAO, UNDP, DHA and others) participate at the session in the capacity as observers.
Preparations for the annual sessions, including preparation of the session documents are handled by the Secretariat of ESCAP, WMO and TC. Delegates and observers to these sessions are from agencies involved with the meteorological, hydrological and
disaster prevention and preparedness aspects of the Committee’s programme.
At each session, the committee reviews the progress made since its last session and takes stock of the current status of implementation of the various programmes required for an efficient system in reducing typhoon damage.
Finally, the Committee in its annual session draws up a programme of work during the inter-sessional period and makes specific recommendations under the Regional Cooperation Program Implementation Plan (RCPIP).At 39th Sesion, the Committee adopted the Typhoon Committee Strategic Plan 2007-2011 which replaces the RCPIP.
